2. LOCAL FISHERMEN CATCH THE PRAWNS IN LOCAL WATERS.
Wild B.C. Spot Prawns are caught along the North Pacific Coast in deep water areas. Specifically in area like the Gulf Islands, Nootka Sound, Barkley Sound, Howe Sound, the Sunshine Coast and more. They live in sandy rocky habitats and are harvested in the ocean depths between 50m and 150m deep. To catch spot prawns, the fishermen use shrimp traps. These sustainable traps are weighted to a buoy or a line and dropped in the water until its time to haul each trap. According to B.C. regulations, fishermen can only fish with 300 traps per license and can only haul up one trap per day between 7:00am and 7:00pm. One boat can have 2 licenses. These rules are in place to maintain the sustainability of this industry.
